How to use AI for product research without falling for made-up claims
AI can organize specifications, summarize your priorities and turn an overwhelming search into a useful comparison. It can also invent prices, mix up product versions or describe reviews it has never actually read. That makes AI a useful research assistant—not a substitute for checking the evidence.
Write down your requirements first
Before asking a chatbot, define your budget, main use, must-have features and acceptable compromises. When shopping for a work monitor, for example, connectivity, adjustability and comfort may matter more than buying the largest screen you can afford.
Ask for a decision framework, not a winner
Try this prompt: “Build a checklist for comparing three monitors for office work. Separate must-have features from nice-to-have features. Do not invent specifications; mark anything that needs verification on the manufacturer’s website.”
This gives you a practical checklist even if the AI tool does not have access to live information. When something is unknown, the answer should say so rather than guess.
Verify claims at their sources
- Specifications: use official manufacturer pages and check the complete model number.
- Price and availability: confirm at checkout, including shipping and local taxes.
- Reviews: look for specific, independently reported experiences and recurring problems.
- Warranty: identify who provides support and what the policy covers.
Watch out for similar product names
Models with nearly identical names can differ in memory, displays, processors, power supplies, connectivity or warranty coverage. Match the full model identifier before accepting an AI-generated comparison. Ask the tool to list missing information instead of forcing an answer from incomplete details.
Keep verified facts separate from opinions
Make a short scorecard based on what matters to you: ergonomics, reliability, compatibility, total cost and other relevant criteria. Use AI to explain the tradeoffs, but enter only values you have confirmed. Any unsupported ranking should remain labeled as an assumption.
Privacy: you do not need to upload receipts containing personal information, addresses, passwords or payment details to compare public product listings. Use publicly available details whenever possible.
The best outcome is a choice you can independently explain and check. AI can save research time, but it should never be treated as proof that a claim is true.
Practical example: our MX Anywhere 3S versus Pebble Mouse 2 comparison separates verified specifications, pros and cons, and use cases from claims of hands-on testing.
